Emmanuel “Onry” Henreid is without doubt one of the few black opera singers within the north-western United States.

In June, he and Portland State College scholar Madisen Hallberg went viral for his or her impromptu duet of the nationwide anthem – a second of racial unity throughout the Black Lives Matter protests.

However Onry’s story sheds mild on persisting inequalities in Portland – and past.
